foo_touchremote 0.1.2
Posted on Feb 7th 2010 by pieceofsummer.
A small update.
Album view on NP screen finally works, but no rating yet. I’m not sure if writing a value into ‘rating’ field would be enough, especially when the file is locked/read-only. That would be great if it is saved in the metadb and not in file tags.
Sorting is worked almost as expected. Still cannot get numbers to follow latin letters, so there’s no jump letters in this release. Couldn’t find any pre-defined locale which sorts things in that way. Maybe need to add some hacks…
Anyway, grab it to find new bugs

AWESOME! cant wait. thanks again for all of your hard work.
Patrick on February 7th, 2010 at 10:33
shit….. its not working. It says it cannot start the component.
pieceofsummer on February 7th, 2010 at 15:03
Oh shi, I’ve eventually broken XP compatibility. Grab a 0.1.2.1 fix.
Patrick on February 7th, 2010 at 20:57
Thanks POS. I cant believe how wonderfully you are supporting this.
Trying now.
Patrick on February 7th, 2010 at 23:31
POS,
All is working great on my end. Sorting is fixed, NP playlist screen working.
Other than the “jump letters” in Artist and Album, this component is PERFECT!!!!
I cant find anything else it needs to do.
THIS IS THE BEST FOOBAR COMPONENT EVER. PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks again for the amazing work you are doing.
oasis on February 8th, 2010 at 15:32
thank you for the update once again. there’s one thing that doesn’t work and i think it’s related to columns_ui.
next / previous track buttons do not behave porperly.
you can easily reproduce it:
start foobar select and album (i use filters for that), lets say “coldplay” and start the first track. now start the remote app on your iphone select a different album, lets say “blur” and start the first track. then click on the “next button” on your iphone. you would expect that plays track2 of the blur album now but instead it plays track2 of the previously selected “colplay album”.
oasis on February 8th, 2010 at 15:37
update: it works when you manually select (focus) the “remote selection”-playlist. this playlist should get auto-focused as soon as you start an album with the remote app
Patrick on February 8th, 2010 at 17:53
Oasis,
Are you sure you are doing both of the following?
- Cursor Follows Playback
and
- Playback follows Cursor
Mine works just fine.
-Patrick
Urs on February 10th, 2010 at 02:30
“Cursor Follows Playback” and “Playback follows Cursor” is not enough. It’s as oasis said: the “remote selection” playlist must be automatically selected as soon as you start an album with the remote app. Otherwise I run into the same issue as oasis.
Patrick on February 10th, 2010 at 04:39
Weird. Im not.
Patrick on February 10th, 2010 at 04:49
Urs and Oasis,
Was this happening in the previous versions? Just curious b/c ive never noticed this happening to me.
Patrick on February 11th, 2010 at 03:15
OK, I see what you are referring to. It happens on my Foobar as well. I just never had any other playlists loaded when using the Remote App, as it precludes the use of a monitor.
I can see how it would be a problem if you used multiple playlists.
Daniel on February 11th, 2010 at 13:05
Hi. Thank you so much for the plugin. It really rocks and is one of the most useful plugins for foobar2000.
Keep up the good work.
Locutus on February 11th, 2010 at 22:15
I’m not certain, but I suspect foo_touchremote is causing foobar to crash. Unfortunately, it is not the type of crash that renders a crash report. foobar becomes unresponsive, and the UI freezes (though music still plays), and eventually Windows 7 64-bit shuts down foobar. It happens frequently when playing music. When removing foo_touchremote from the components folder it doesn’t seem to happen anymore.
pieceofsummer on February 12th, 2010 at 01:44
Hmm, guys, I’m able to reproduce that only when ‘playback follows cursor’ and ‘cursor follows playback’ are turned on. The case is I’m setting a ‘playing’ playlist, not the ’selected’ one.
Think it should be shanged to make that options work correctly.
Locutus, need more details to answer your question. Does it ‘crash’ your foobar when you’re using iPhone as a remote, or also when Remote is not connected? Does it freeze only on certain albums, or album doesn’t matter? How many songs do you have in your library?
Also, no updates this week. I’m too busy at work and already have plans for weekend
Locutus on February 12th, 2010 at 04:36
pieceofsummer, I will document precisely what is happening in foobar next time it crashes.
* So far all I can say with certainty is that it hasn’t happened when I used the Remote app on my iPod Touch to access foobar. Each time it’s happened I was using foobar on my desktop.
* I haven’t noticed any pattern of crashing pertaining to the album being played.
* 13062 tracks in my library

Hi. Maybe I am blind but where can I get this app for iPhone?
I have Foobar plugin however do not see any link to iPhone application … ??
pieceofsummer on February 17th, 2010 at 20:27
App for iPhone is made by Apple and available in App Store for free.
Jan on February 17th, 2010 at 20:41

Scidd0w on February 19th, 2010 at 23:16
pieceofsummer;
Thank you for this great component. I have one problem with it thoug.
The first time i start foobar and the program it works way fine and it finds the library really quick. Everything keeps working untill the program is closed once. (when keep connected is on its only when manually restarting the remote app)
The 2nd time the program starts it keeps searching for the library but can’t find it. This goes on untill foobar2000 is restarted. After a foobar restart the app finds the library super quick again and it works like a charm. Untill the app is closed and restarted again.
Any idea whats wrong? I’m using the latest version of foobar and the component on win7 x64.
Locutus on February 22nd, 2010 at 06:02
pieceofsummer,
I’m happy to say that the cause of foobar2000 freezing was not due to foo_touchremote.
Workaholic on February 27th, 2010 at 09:25
Thank you for this truly amazing work.
What surprised me the most is how fast you made a very stable and useful plug-in.
I can report only one problem in sorting.
If there are albums which span over 2 or more disks I use the same album name just with different “Disc number” in the tag.
In that case the sorting is done incorrectly. The component takes the first song from album one (1.1) and then the first song from album 2 (2.1).
When this mix-up happens there is no album art showed either (even thou there is)
If you correct that, the component will be perfect.
Locutus on February 27th, 2010 at 20:34
I had to reinstall Windows 7 (64-bit) and foobar2000. Now my iPod Touch (gen. 1) Remote cannot connect to the foobar2000 library and pops up this message, “Remote could not connect to your Library. If you have a firewall enabled in your router or computer make sure the firewall is not blocking communication with Remote”.
It successfully pairs with the device in foobar2000, but that’s about it. It is able to pair and connect to the iTunes library.
Any ideas as to what I might do to make it work?
Juan on March 3rd, 2010 at 18:03
Locutus, this sounds stupid but it worked for me: I had the same thing happening and I got it solved by manupulating foobar controls (browsing the library or playing different tunes) during the connection process. Dont know why but it worked.
hope it helps
Juan on March 3rd, 2010 at 18:06
I also have the problem that Oasis mentioned on FEb 8th, I guess everyone have it.
spravca on March 3rd, 2010 at 18:25
is it possible to make my own playlist throught iPod? if yes, then how?
Patrick on March 3rd, 2010 at 18:31
I agree it is a problem but for now it one that is easily mitigated.
If you are using the remote app you can easily run without any other playlists open. That is how I do it. I never noticed the problem until I forced it by open activating a play list then selecting something with Remote.
I sure POS will fix it, but in the meantime simply do everything thru the remote app.
JoeBob on March 4th, 2010 at 17:16
Hey, awesome component, exactly what I needed. thanks for the great work. One feature I’d like to request is the ability to edit / create playlists in Foobar from the remote. I can do that with itunes, but not in Foobar, unless I’m missing something. I like to add songs to the currently playing list on the fly and that’s the only thing lacking from the remote. Thanks again for the killer app.
qfork on March 5th, 2010 at 23:48
what about making my own playlists? I want to listen various albums without any pause.
Timothy Hudson on March 7th, 2010 at 09:36
Would you care making Artists sort by Album Artist? This would help me so much.
pieceofsummer on March 9th, 2010 at 00:54
For all aiming to edit playlists from iPhone: that is already planned for the future, just be patient.
Timothy Hudson, what do you mean by “sort Artists by Album Artist”? They’re sorted alphabetically.
To everybody: future releases are delayed due to lack of time and a lot of work to do at my primary job. So there’s nothing to be released for at least the next two weeks. Sorry.
Patrick on March 9th, 2010 at 01:05
qfork,
For now, make the playlists in foobar, you can then select them in Remote app.
Timothy,
As far as I can tell it already does this. If no Album Artist tag, it will sort by Artist.
POS,
Thanks again for all of the hard work. 2 weeks is nothing. I will happily wait. It is basically perfect now!!!
Patrick on March 9th, 2010 at 01:07
POS,
Quick question for you. Am I correct that if there is no “Track Name”, it will not show up in the Album List?
Just curious. I have some old rips that were never re-tagged and have an empty “Track Name”.
thx,
Patrick
Locutus on March 10th, 2010 at 20:20
Using foo_ui_columns (0.3.8.4), if playback is set to “Playback Follows Cursor” and “Cursor Follows Playback,” foo_touchremote cannot control what is being played. It simply plays the track highlighted on the foobar2000 client.
@Juan, that didn’t work for me, but foo_touchremote was able to communicate with foobar2000 after I rebooted my PC.
Guido on March 15th, 2010 at 11:39
Many thanks for this component!!!
It works fine but i have the same problem as “Workaholic”:
“If there are albums which span over 2 or more disks I use the same album name just with different “Disc number” in the tag.
In that case the sorting is done incorrectly. The component takes the first song from album one (1.1) and then the first song from album 2 (2.1).”
Is there any chance to fix that?
THX,
Guido
qfork on March 15th, 2010 at 16:02
is there any chance to fix long name’s of albums or songs – to scroll/roll the long text?
thx
Manuel Costa on March 16th, 2010 at 19:19
Hi Everyone…
I use Foobar for a ong time but only now I decided to try the components spread all over the internet and yours really got my attention. I think the touchremote idea is fantastic but I have a small problem: no ipod/iphone. Is there an app for Windows Mobile (I own an HTC Touch HD) that allows me to use this plugin?
Thanks in advance,
Manuel

Great app when it worked.First time i installed it it worked great . THen it crashed and caused foobar to crash and now i have uninstalled and reinstalled foobar(1.01) i have deleted and reinstalled app on the iphone BUt now i cannot find the libary. It detects the iphone fine and you put the handshake code in ok but then does not find the library… Will go back to using the http mode just now but would be sweet if we could get this working. thanks for making

Bastien on March 25th, 2010 at 04:17
Hey pieceofsummer,
Do you have any plans to release the sources of your plugin? We’re looking to implement server-side support in a Linux library, and fancied having more data on the inner-workings of DACP. Any hints for us?
Feel free to contact me on the contact page of my website if you want to discuss it by mail.
Cheers
pieceofsummer on March 30th, 2010 at 17:37
Bastien, I have no plans on releasing the source code, but I’m planning to release docs on protocol details once I manage to get it all together.
Anyway, aren’t there a bunch of Linux implementations already?
Bastien on April 1st, 2010 at 15:05
Hey pieceofsummer,
Apart from the Android app, there’s no work that’s been done on integration, and the docs on the initial pairing are also pretty thin on the ground.
So any help would be appreciated.
Cheers
David on April 10th, 2010 at 02:42
First, thanks for a great implementation, I’m really enjoying it. Since I know you are still in beta testing let me run down a problem I encounter: often when first entering the remote app on the phone, it stalls when attempting to connect to Foobar. If I start playing something in Foobar using the computer, the remote immediately recognizes the library and all is well. From my end, it’s no big deal but I thought you would want to know. Thanks again for this plugin!
